Taking ATM to the Next Level

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has estimated that air traffic in the Asia Pacific will triple by 2030. With this increase in air traffic and a more complex operating environment, off-the-shelf air traffic management solutions may no longer suffice. New ATM technologies and solutions must be developed to achieve greater capacity, and maintain high safety and service standards in Singapore and the Asia Pacific.

In this regard, CAAS is developing Singapore as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Air Traffic Management (ATM) to innovate future solutions through Research and Development (R&D).

The CoE for ATM will enable a vibrant ecosystem in Singapore where a convergence of minds, ideas and innovations - from research institutes, think tanks, industry players, academia, international ATM entities and aviation stakeholders - will culminate in the development, testing and validation of ATM concepts, technologies and solutions.

A fund of S$200 million has been specially set aside by CAAS to support ATM R&D in Singapore. So far, we have partnered with the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and The MITRE Corporation to establish the ATM Research Institute and MITRE Asia Pacific Singapore respectively. A joint laboratory has also been established with the Institute for Infocomm Research to advance ATM R&D.
