Radiation Hazards and Safety Inspection

You will gain knowledge in the management of radiation hazards.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Understand radiation and radioactive materials, and procedures for the safe handling of radiation emitting equipment and radiation sources
  • Understand national and international requirements for the safe transport of radioactive materials
  • Manage emergency situations in the event of a radiation accident, especially during transportation
  • Conduct safety inspection packages and containers which may contain radioactive sources, or contaminated with radioactivity

What is Covered

  • Basic atomic and nuclear theory, including atomic and nuclear structures
  • Radioactive properties of gamma and other particulate emissions
  • Quantities and units – radioactivity, half-life, dose and dose rate, energy
  • Production of X-rays – atomic and bremsstrahlung
  • Interaction of radiation with matter, ionisation, excitation, photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, pair production
  • Biological effects of radiation
  • Principles of radiation protection
  • Shielding calculations, calculate dose from dose-rate, inverse square law
  • Radiation instruments for detection and measurement – personal dosimeter, survey meters
  • Legislation, dose limits, personal monitoring
  • International transport regulations
  • Detection and scanning equipment at borders
  • Emergency response procedures
  • Contamination control/decontamination
  • Non-ionising radiation
